I am trying to get social security for my 6 year old because I was told by several people that he would qualify.
Did anyone do it all on their own? Get help from someone?
Where would I go to get help filling out forms. Is there someone that helps with this?
Anything would be helpful.
Thanks
He has lippomyelomeningocele, completely incontinent, physical therapy for inward turning ankles. Different size feet. Homeschooled due to emotional stress caused by wearing diapers.
It's going to depend on where you are and your social security system.
I would front up to the front counter of the nearest social security office and tell them excactly what you've told us.
Don't hesitate to ask for help filling out forms, it's common place, should't be a problem, all part of thier job.
Patience!! may be needed, one question, one form, one step at a time,
that may have to be double checked. Where are you?

I am in NY. The closest ss office is about 1.5 hours away but I will call first and get all the info so I know what to bring. Thanks Sean!

In NY the Early Intervention services are the best for helping you get services. After age three though, the services then are transitioned to the school system. Early Intervention gives you a social worker that helps with all services, you could still call them to ask about who to contact for social work help. I've not been told my daughter qualifies for SSI/disability, and she's incontinent as well, she did wear AFO's for awhile, but not for now.
The social worker has been working on a Medicaid waiver,(not income based) and my daughter hasn't qualified for that yet either. Did your son recieve Early Intervention services? Do you take him to a SB clinic? (Our SB clinic has a social worker).
We were advised when our daughter was born 07, by the hospital social worker, to apply for SSI/disability, but we were denied. It could have been income related as income had to be poverty level, or she had to require institutional care. I'm in upstate NY, where about are you?

I applied for SSI immediatley. My daughter was denied twice, I appealed both denials, the last time I was heard by a judge. I did not hire a lawyer. I picked up all of her medical records myself, read through them probably a hundred times, and questioned the doctors notes who deemed her as not disabled enough. The judge listened and sided with me... It may be a long process but it is worth the wait. My mom is a retiree from the SSI teleservice center so if anyone has any other questions I can ask her.

The social security administration can be infuriating at times. I can only second what you were told in an earlier post. Apply if you have questions and you can't get to the office then i would call and tell them exactly what you told us. Keep asking until your questions are answered. It can take some time and you may very well be denied. Try again.
My son who has SBO and sacral agenesis was given SSI and medicaid soon after birth. Not long after his tethered cord release operation they took it away from him. I did not hire a lawyer but I did hire someone who specialiazed in representing people with this same problem (may as well have hired a lawyer the cost was about the same) We won and they left us alone until I started making to much money for him to qualify.
Good luck and if you have more questions please don't hesitate to ask!
