My daughter has her 2nd UTI in just over a month. We had her on antibiotics the last time around and it cleared things up but I really would like to avoid abx so soon. I am pumping her with water today and giving her D-mannose and a cranberry supplement. I was thinking I would give it another couple of days to see if it clears on it's own. Obviously, if she gets a fever or it gets much worse I'll get her in to the doctor.
Do you ever simply allow your UTIs to go away on their own? Do they ever just go away without abx?
Thanks!!
Renee

i clean UTI by drinking excess water to flush bacteria. its enough. it just goes away by flushing. no need of antibiotics. i also resist antibiotics because they affect immunity and result in general weakness.

Definitely don't use antibiotics if she is not actually ill. Harmless "infections" are a normal part of life. I had a stable "tame" colony of Staphlococcus aureus in my bladder for about 30 years until my bladder was "disconnected" about 6-7 years ago.

anyways if u want to be cautious and thought of bladder being disconnecting seems terrible, better go for herbal antibiotic "himalaya manjishtha" for UTI. In india it is easily available under brand name "himalaya drug company". otherwise dont get haunted by the idea of disconnecting bladder, its not a common procedure. i dont know why dodger had to disconnect his bladder.

Does she have reflux? If not, I'd say give it a couple of days. If she does have reflux, I don't know....

Ditto what others have said. My last couple of UTIs went away with only a ton of hydration. No meds, no ER visit, just plain water (though I do hear cranberry is good for the bladder, too).

Beer too! For the adults of course.

Well, Analise now has a fever so looks like the antibiotics are necessary after all.

Ugh. I'm sorry Analise has a fever now. That's the pits.
I am on my 4th UTI in 2 months. I have not started antibiotics yet for this one (waiting for the culture to come back tomorrow), but have been chugging the water all day, eating dried cranberries and also stopped by the drug store for some of that cranberry extract stuff. Praying it will help. Sick of being sick. :(

Lol. Last time I had a UTI, it became evident about halfway through my trip to the local pub for an evening of soccer and beer. I was OK the next day, IIRC.

I take Primsol for UTIs as a preventative. Doesn't really do much, but keep the smell down. I never treated one unless I had symptoms or my doctor made me.

Garry - Take a really good look at the 5th word in my post!
Once you get sick, medication is neccessary. The point of flushing with water, cranberry, d-mannose, beer, etc. is to try to get it out before illness sets in.
Beer sounds good,it'd have a double effect, flushing the system and pain relief, excellent idea! :-)

I use tea instead of beer. The tea has the same flushing affect on me and I can't even stand the smell of beer much less the taste (long story of teenage stupidity is behind my dislike of the stuff)

I'm sorta the same,at one time in my life I couldn't get enough beer in me.Since I've stopped making a pig of myself with booze I find I've lost the taste for it.When out with friends now I have to literally force myself to drink a few,the smell and taste are Blachhh. It's fun watching my friends get drunk though, all the while they think I'm keeping up with them.

I also have teenage stupidity that turns me right off booze and alcholism in the family.
I can not let go of my senses. Rare, but I do like a cold beer on a hot day.
Never thought of it as good for flushing out UTI's, I know it flows out of me at warp speed. I'm going to give it a go next time. I'm into green tea, used to be a big coffee drinker, green tea really is a feel good drink all round, skin, weight control, clear thinking (for me).
But Barley water is the best for me if things get bad.
Common barley boiled up strained, lemon , sugar or honey. It can be a bit thick so dilute to taste, it's kind of fibreish so it can cleanse the bowel as well.
Can drinking to much in a short period harm the kidneys?
Never liked plain water.

Yes. I am not sure about damage to the kidneys but people have actually died from drinking too much water because it can deplete your electrolytes which could lead to seizures and irregular heart rhythms and other problems. :6775:

My roommate ended up in the ICU because she drank too much water and ended up with hyponatremia. :sign0007:
It is recommended to increase your fluid intake when you have a UTI, but don't go crazy.

I wondered too, if you just let the UTI be cleared without antibiotics. But after 14 days and bad diaper rash and smell, along with very cloudy urine the uro told me I should treat it. Her appetite was down as well. I tried cranActin, a concentrated capsule form of cranberry extract. It didn't seem to help her though. Sarah had e.coli, then Enterobacter, then back to e.coli. now we started med on wed. and tonite her diapers are smelly (smells like enterobacter again) and her urine is cloudy on the med. (new culture if it continues).
I'm worried about this "treat e. coli, then enterobacter overgrows, then treat that, and e.coli overgrows". How do we get out of this cycle? Maybe treat with an antibiotic that kills both, then I wonder what bacteria will take over then. This is scary to me. I worry that antibiotics will become ineffective.
