A week and a half ago I got my last US before I have my son. I ask like usual...does everything look the same? This time he said that the brain ventricles looked a little bigger. I asked was it still mild and he said no, moderate to severe. What does that mean?? Is that just because I am getting close to delivery and it's went this long untreated and that's what happens?? I am getting really nervous and anxious about everything, with only 10 days left till he is here, I have been a none stop worry wart! Thanks everyone for answering my questions, I love this site!!!! God bless

I was the same way when i was pregnant with Hannah. I asked EVERY SINGLE TIME...is it getting any worse....any better....will she be ok. I prob drove my doctor crazy LoL. Hannahs ventricles did get bigger towards the end as well. It will be ok... he will be in surgery soon after he is born and they will fix all of that. Try not to worry ( i know its seems impossible but try) and enjoy your last week and a half of your pregnancy....soon you will have your litte one in your arms! You and your family are in my prayers....keep us updated! :clap2:

The doctors told me that they expect the hydro to get 'worse' during pregnancy. I wouldnt worry too much. some parents on this site had babies with severe hydro during pregnancy and their babies are doing great! The babies skull can stretch pre birth to allow for hydro, it really becomes a problem if not treated after birth.

I concur with the others-- don't get overly worried about it. Yes, it's typical for the hydro to worsen through the pregnancy. My daughter's slowly worsened but it wasn't until she was 3 months of age until she was shunted. You're in the home stretch now and once you're holding your child you will feel much more at peace. Many blessings to you as you await your baby's birth!

yes, hydro gets worse. i drove my doctor crazy too! lizzie wasn't shunted til 6 months. here's the deal - infants' skulls are not closed until 6-8 months in the back & 2 years on top (i think those are the right ages). anyway, what that means is that the hydrocephalus will not cause brain damage early on because there is space for the ventricles to get larger without hurting the baby. lizzie's neuro chose the wait & see technique even though he felt like she would eventually need to be shunted. he said it is easier doing that surgery on a baby that is bigger than a newborn.

My neonatologist reassured me that even severe hydro doesn't cause brain damage. Babies brains are very resiliant he said.

I would have to concur. We had the same issue and asked all the time until a doctor told us that there was very little rish of brain damage. If the ventricles are somewhat normal in the early pregnancy and get larger this seems to be ok. Large seems to be varied. We were told our daughter had very large ventricles yet the doctor had seen ventricles 2x what are daughter had. It seems to be perspective with very lil consequences. I would not worry too much.
