C has slit vents and can get awful headaches~especially when the barometric pressures changes. The NS (neurosurgeon) suggested that we discuss a temporal decompression but in the same time said that in his experience kids outgrow slit vents around the age of 13 so we may just want to hang on. C is 9.

Has anyone had a temporal decompression? It sounds barbaric but the NS says it is actually one of the easier things to do.

Has anyone ever experienced kids outgrowing slit vents?

This slit vents caught my eye on this post. A year ago, my daughter was diagnosed with the same. I've heard of headaches for shunt malfunctions, but never with the slit vents (makes sense though). My daughter doesn't notify us of pain; however, she does tend to be tired and lie down at school quite a bit. Makes me wonder if this isn't why!

(Thanks for this site yet again.....am amazed, the things I've learned in just a matter of days!!)

You are very welcome for the site. But you guys are the ones that make it what it is :)

The headaches from the slit vents come in two forms, the ones when he is overfull and the ones when the vents are almost empty. When they are full he tends to not have much of an appetite, is more tired, and his chiari symptoms are worse. When they are almost empty, he is CRANKY!!!!

Just curious, but what are slit vents? I've heard the term many times, and judging by the name I think I can figure it out, but I just wanted to know for sure.
Thanks,

It the condition where the ventricles over fill and then over drain in a cyclic pattern.

We saw the NS yesterday. C has had a wierd weakness in his legs that just came on all of a sudden last week. We are going in for an MRI later this week but he is still talking about this temporal decompression helping. Guess we will see what the MRI machine has to say

Good luck, Barb. Let us know what happens!

My son is going for his check-up on Monday - the first one after we've found this site. Poor doc, he's going to get a 200-page questionnaire this time!
