so i just found out that my baby has chiari malformation. my doctor is new and doesnt seem to really know what this means. i heard it can cause problems with their sucking and swallowing. does this mean she's gonna have to be on a feeding tube? also, i keep hearing all these terms about afo's kafo's and smo's i understand that they are some kind of leg brace, but ive seen kids that "have new afo's" and i didnt notice any braces. maybe they dont wear tham all the time? im confused... can someone elaborate?

There's some good info and links on Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiari_malformation
AFO-Ankle-Foot Orthotic. Most go to right under the knee.
SMO-goes to the top of the ankle.
kafo-covers the knee
C had a Chiari Malformation that made him throw up (A LOT) and delayed his speech. At three he had the chiari decompression surgery which helped immensely. Chiari is very common with sb. Unless it causes significant eating or speech issues than you normally dont do anything about it. You wont know until the baby is born how it will affect them.
BTW--do you have a name yet?

im thinking about the name maverick. it means wildly independant. everyone says its a boys name, but babynames.com says its unisex. i want her to have a strong name to go along with the strong person she is going to grow up to be. another name im thinking about is irene. i have a 93 year old grandmother who has beaten all odds and survived bone cancer less than two years ago. she is the strongest person i know. she will never tell you she doesn't feel well. she still gets out, at her age, and walks around a full block for exercise evryday. last summer, she helped with yardwork. and i think i might like to honor her by naming the baby after her. but im still open to suggestions. my husband has no idea what he likes. he wanted a boy and only picked out a boy name:p
as far as the chiari malformation: thanks for the link. im going there to check it out now!
