View Full Version : Does anyone homeschool their child with sb?
I took C out of school this year (and quit my teaching job in the same school) for a lot of reasons this year. One was because he was missing so much school in and out of the hospital. The other was that the school was getting so dificult to deal with. He was locked out of the school building for almost an hour on the blacktop in 110 degree heat and no one even knew he was gone. We did not get so much as an apology from the school. Anyway, as a teacher, the last thing I ever thought I would do was homeschool but I am finding that I really love it and he is able to blossom at his own pace. He has an older brother, lots of friends in the neighborhood and goes to wheelchair sports weekly but, of course, I worry about him fitting into 'regular' life. So, does anyone else out there do this and what are your thoughts on balancing it all?

My son was homeschooled for a year - during his back operations, as he was not allowed to move much, not mentioning catching a bus to school.
This allowed him to keep up with the school work, but as he could not participate in any extra-curricular activities, he did miss having friends, etc. My mother did the homeschooling. She doesn't have any educational qualifications, but she did have a very very wonderful homeschooling package, which helped a lot.
The back op was in this case the problem, and not the home schooling - it actually helped him tremendously to be able to carry on with his school work. It made him feel that he could at least still do some of the things he usually did.
My feeling is that as long as the child does interact with other children his age, and the education level is on or above par - why not?
With the drop in discipline and motivation at most schools, more and more kids (special and plain ones) are opting for home schooling these days. There is a retired primary school teacher who does home schooling for about 4 kids (2 grandchildren and two friends) in her home town - and they are doing great!

My children are not homeschooled, although I'm about ready to do so. Seems the public schools can get around many "laws"; they always seem to have the upperhand, no matter how well or how much you fight for your children's education.
For us, it has been so freeing! He has, for the first time, a REAL IEP. Meaning, everything is individuailzed for him because I can. I worried for a long time about if this was the right thing to do. I originally posted this in September of last year. It is funny to read now because I don't have those doubts anymore. Like anything else in life, what works for one person may not be the right thing for another. :)
