Hi, I am so happy to have found this site! I have four children, the youngest is going to be 3 and has SB. Wow! what an experience this has been! First off, let me say that Zane is the light of our lives! He is a very bright, talkative, beautiful boy! He recieves therapy once a week and can walk independently with a walker but still prefers to crawl. He wears AFO's to the knee's. If there is one thing that I have learned on this journey it is that all SB kids are different no matter what the level of their defect. I used to think that because my sons defect was low he would have less problems. What few problems he has are minor but he still has them. He does have a VP shunt since birth but it has functioned great. He now knows that he has one and frequently asks me if I have one! He is cathed every 3-4 hours and has lately been telling me that he has to go potty although I really don't think that he can tell this, it's just from being around the other kids at the sitters that are potty training. We have only had 2 bladder infections. I am especially happy to read how other parents are handling their children that are about this age, especially with school approaching.

I am glad to hear he is doing so well. I do want to say don't rush to judgment on what he can and can't feel you would be SURPRISED he might be able to tell when he has to go sometimes. It never hurts to give him a shot at trying to do the best he can with potty training. My son was not supposed to be able to potty train "by definition" but he is fully contenent. It took us a lot longer than all the other kids (by a lot longer i mean several years) but he could feel eventhough he does get false alarms sometimes. I tell you a little trick i tried with my son. I put 2 drops of red food coloring in the toilet (it doesn't stain but don't put more than 2 drops in or this won't work) after it sat for awhile all the water turned red. When he peed in the potty the color changed right before his eyes. he was amaized!!!!!! after that he couldn't wait to go and would look forward to getting the feeling he had to go. It may not work but you never know till you try!!

Hi UKkat

Welcome to the forum.

Please don't take what I am about to say here as a personal attack - it applies to all parents in your situation.

What you have posted here has me really worried!
Your child is 16 months old but you can still say " i dont know much about her condition just what drs say or dont say".
Why is that?
Don't you ask the doctors questions?
Are there no good libraries near you?
Do you not know how to use the internet to do research?
You are slipping up in your sacred duty as a parent if you do not make a real effort to become an expert on your child's condition as fast as possible. 16 months (more if the diagnosis was made in-utero) of learning should be adequate time to aquire sufficient specialised knowledge about SB and related conditions, to run rings around most junior doctors - you could be teaching them by now.

I'm sure we in this forum will do whatever we can to help you get up to the necessary level of expertise.

Thanks, It was my last resort i had tried everything to get that kid at least a little intrested in the potty. Let him pee outside, tin can, froot loops in the toilet, you name it i tried it and he just didn't care at all about it. When the food coloring was introduced that was all she wrote!!! It works with the other colors as well!!!!
A lot of my friends have tried it. It works really well with boys as they get to watch as the colors change!!!!
