So I know on this site most of you or your children have shunts. Lyla does not. The doctors are always asking me questions about Lyla pertaining to hydro and arnold chiari at our visits. And one is about her making a high pitched noise while breathing, its a sign of the arnold chiari. And she does, mostly at nite but sometimes during the day. Maybe some of your children got shunts at an older age and you experienced this? Her head is still measuring good and there is no surgery on the horizon (for now! lol) but Im just hopeing she doesnt start experiencing problems with the chiari. I no the larger percentage doest experience symptoms because of it but Im just curious. Maybe thats how shes always gonna breathe or maybe something needs to be done, I sure hope not! Well I hope everyone one is doing well. And as usual thanks in advance

snoring and noises could be a sign of the chiari which could cause sleep apnea.

Zach had stridor (high pitched noisy breathing) when he was an infant. It is a Chiari symptom. Sometimes hydrocephalus makes Chiari symptoms worse. He had two decompressions and doesn't have the stridor anymore. He also has sleep apnea (Chiari issue), and he sleeps with a pulse/ox.

Stridor! Thats the word :) Has the apnea always accompanied it or did it get worse? Cause I dont think Lyla has apnea. Ive never seen her stop breathing, she just always has the high pitch noise while breathing.

The apnea has always been there. He has had 10 second pauses when he's sleeping since he was really little. It's worse if his shunt isn't working well.

Stridor doesn't necessarily have to be related to hydrocephalus or chiari. My niece has neither of those and she had stridor, which she eventually outgrew.

Sometimes when I'm asleep, I half wake up with a sudden breath and a kind of snore. Does this sound like sleep apnea?

Thank LisaJoy! I know I have heard other babies do that, but of course in my head it all goes back to spina bifida :( well now Im gonna take a deep breath and let it go! That just might be how she breathes!

While LisaJoy is right, I would not suggest just letting it go. I think it warrants speaking to the doctor about it since it can be Chiair related.

Smoop is right -- I didn't mean for you to let it go, just that you shouldn't panic about it because it is not necessarily hydro/chiari related. It's a good idea to bring it up at her next appointment.

Im sorry guys I guess I said that wrong. Her doctors ARE aware that she makes those noises but dont really have anything to say because she doesnt have any other symtoms. I was just curious as to if I should be super concerned that nothing is being done. So when I said I'll relax, I meant I wont stress about it since her doctors are informed :)

Sounds like you are on top of things Lysette! My sister said that it stridor is scary to listen to, so I'm sure "relaxing" about it will be hard to do!
