My local WIC program is trying to tell me my baby will have to be on a special formula and they dont provide it. Now that upsets me cause the doctors and nurses told me he could use any formula i chose. I'm sooo confused and upset. anyone else been through this?

I've never heard of having to be on a special formula before. My son is 3 months old and is on Similac and the only thing we discussed regarding formula at the NICU was whether or not I was going to breast feed. You might contact your physician rather than the WIC program. Good Luck!

Did they mention any allergies? Possibly a lactose allergy and/or soy allergy. My son had both, and had to use a special formula. Some clinics/hospitals only supply lactose-based formula, while others will supply lactose-based and soy-based...

C could only stomach Nutramigen. It was very expensive--$35 a can ten years ago. If you have a DR's scrip though WIC should cover it. If they don't, insurance might or at the least, it is a medical write off.

For those of you who don't know this--after the age of three, SOME insurance will cover diapers and pullups. If you aren't that lucky, you can at least get the DR to write a scrip for them so that you can use your HSA or write it off your taxes (this is USA only info). Keep your receipts for anything you buy the baby/child that a 'typical' baby would not need. All it takes is a prescription which most doctors are more than willing to give you for tax purposes.

PS--I just noticed that your baby is not even born yet. They have no clue what the baby will be able to tolerate. Please don't let them scare you! Geez, I hate when dr's say stupid stuff like that and get a new parent all worked up!

wic is crazy. they wont give me a breastpump until i bring the baby in there. but they said they could give me one before the normal waiting period of a month since my baby's in the nicu. so i asked the lady: "are you saying that i will have to take my baby from nicu and bring her here so that you will give me a pump i can use while she is in nicu? what am i supposed to do? check her out for the day so you people can look at her?" and the lady just looked at me like i was crazy and repeated herself. i hate government run programs. they cant deny you formula. i havent been told anything about babies with sb needing specific formula, so i would think you could feed him whatever.

What puzzles me most about this whole thread (ignoring the US -specific burocratic babble) is the unstated and totally unjustified assumption that you won't be breastfeeding.

As for the pre-natal spurious and speculative "diagnosis" of a need for "special" formula - all I can say is: Huh?

One of my children had to have some odd formula... (I do not remember the name of it, him not being on it all that long).....I had to have the store order it for the babe every so many days. WIC did indeed pay for it. However, it wasn't long before he ended up being better suited to Similac/Soy (they paid for as well). When he was older, on to milk, he was failure-to-thrive. Therefore, instead of cereal, cheese, eggs, etc, he would get PediaSure. I had to have a prescription for it (they wouldn't even let me just get it and give it to them....they had to have it faxed over every appointment). However, they did pay for it, and at the price it was about 10 years ago, I'd much rather have them pay for that than the milk, etc. The kiddo's just fine now; the failure-to-thrive did NOT last for long, I tell ya. :):D

Thank you guys for all your imput on my questions no matter how small or large the matter is. Finding this site was truly a blessing. I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart. Its nice to hear from people that have been there, and not from a doctor you dont understand half the time haha.:D
