I have been going back in time , to the day my son was born. Strangely I remembered something that my doctor had said to me , something that had helped me in those early days. I had completely forgotten his words, but now I am wondering maybe those words will help others.
Right after my baby was born, I just couldn’t stop crying, my doctor who delivered my son came over to me and patted my hand. He told me his younger brother was born with spina bifida, and was doing great. He said he was able to walk with braces and was just about to get married. He then went on and said this was the reason behind why he became a doctor. My baby was just about to be discharged from the hospital because we were going to travel outside for his operations. The doctor continued to talk, he told me it is very important to exercise and massage my babies legs and feet. He said start now the sooner the better because each baby is born with hundreds of extra nerves that haven’t been giving their jobs yet. He said by exercising the feet and legs, a message will be sent to the brain that one of those nerves are needed, and just might find a connection. Shortly after birth those extra nerves will swivel up and die. When my son was born his feet were twisted in a strange angle and there was only very slight movement. I started to exercise his legs and feet just hours after he was born. One week later he had his operation on his back. I remember right after the operation that strange twist went away, and movement looked stronger. I really don’t know if what the doctor said really made a difference? But I like to think it did. It was his words that kept me exercising his feet , praying one of those extra nerves had found its way to his legs and feet. Today, my son is walking, he wears braces but he walks without them, inside the house. And yes we feel very blessed

You explained it very well. I also started to massage, and bicycle Sarah's legs after our discharge froom the hospital. I noticed a change within a month or so that her feet began to have more movement. She's 18mos. and I still massage her legs and feet when I can hold her down long enough. It's hard nowadays.

That was a great Doctor, thanks for sharing this.
