Ok this has nothing to do with spina bifida but i am pissed off and i have to rant. My son rode his bike to the park which is 2 blocks away. This is nothing new he goes all the time. He is usually home on time but today when he was a half hour late i started to get worried. My husband went to the store and said he would swing by the park to tell him to come home. Well i get a phone call and all i hear is i found him his bike is gone the police are on the way!!!! I didn't know what to say i went into straight freak out mode. I called him back and he told me my son's bike was stolen, and his helmet was thrown into the creek and to bring his yearbook so we could point the kid out. Now i am just PISSED OFF!!!! I tear out of my driveway to get to the park to find out that some kid stole his bike and they said he threw it in the creek. The police are checking into it and hopefully he will get his bike back. It makes me really not want to ever let him go out on his own again. I know i can't do that but i will tell you one thing that boy's mom is lucky i don't know where they live or me and her would have to have a little talk!!!! Luckily he wasn't hurt they stole it when his back was turned. He was chasing down the kid that stole his helmet when they took the bike!!!!

My son is 11 years old. I was just going to let this kid go with a warning from the cops until i heard what happened at school today. That little punk went up to him and bragged about throwing his bike in the creek. After i heard that i changed my mind. He thinks it is funny well lets see how funny it is when i press charges. We went to the police station and explained and they said they didn't blame us for doing that. In the park they have cameras and i have the pictures of the kid with his helmet and they are looking to see if they got a shot of him taking the bike. If he gets away with this he will just keep going thinking there are no consiquences to his actions. Maybe this way he will see that you pay for the things you do.
You know i don't get it i would have never tried something like that when i was a kid. My kids wouldn't try anything like that because they KNOW that if they did the police would be the LEAST of their worries!!!! My husband and i would be what they feared. I haven't talked to his parents (i don't know who they are) but i am curious to see what they think.

My husband and i talked last night and we are signing my son up for karate lessons. We figure he is getting to the age now where stuff like this is going to happen and it would be stupid of us not to have him at least learn how to protect himself if he gets into a tight spot. I know a lot of people wouldn't let their children with SB do something like this but i think it is important for all of us to learn how to protect ourselves to the best of our ability. Not to scare anyone but the statistics i have heard is that the disabled have a higher chance of being attacked than most. Reason being we look like easy targets. I don't remember the exact statistic but i will contact the person that showed it to me and I will post it up here. To me that is alarming!!! I can't keep my son up under me he has to make his place in this world so i feel the only way i can protect him is to give him the knowledge to protect himself. I explained to the instructer about his neck (fusion done a year ago) but that i didn't feel like it should be an issue. He may have SB but he isn't made out of glass! The instructer said he would keep a special eye on him but wouldn't treat him any differently which is EXACTLY what i wanted. I mean the worse case would be he would break a bone and if he does we will just get it fixed. I hope that doesn't sound cold but to me it is important to try everything in life. We are going hiking next weekend through some caverns and i am so excited. All the other cub scout moms are waiting to see how i am going to do it with my crutches. I have done this before and it is a blast!!! I just know that when i am gone i don't want to go out not having tried EVERYTHING in life there is to try even if there are risks. I hope my son sees it the same way.

I agree with you - prosecution to the full extent of the law!
"Junior thugs" and bullies should never be allowed to get away with their crimes.

Yip - if they get away with it now "because they're just kids", they'll grow up thinking they can get away with anything.
Might sound harsh, but its true.

Makes one wonder about the quality of their parenting.
