hello,my name is Ed.I dont suffer with spina bifida but one of my very best friends does.He is 27 the same age as me and I am worried about him.Can anyone tell me whether there are any liver related illnesses or that go hand in hand with spina bifida as he is appearing weak and pale recently and he doesnt drink.

i know there are urinary problems related to SB, if he is retaining water then maybe he should get his liver and kidneys checked out.

Urinary tract infections are common, but should be well managed by the time one reaches 27 years of age.
Besides that, the really aren't any illnesses associated with SB.

Liver problems could be a form of hepatitis - not SB related, but is the kind of thing one can pick up in hospital.
Has he been in hospital within the last year or so?

no but he was told to stop drinking a year or so ago,he had some sort of kidney of liver infection. He is very weak for someone of his age aswell,he can walk and walk but can lift very little.Recently he is looking unwell when there is no obvious reason for him to.He has suffered from stomach cramps all his life, not regularly they come and go....but he has a track record of being sick when he got drunk.

Well then he has probably damaged his liver.
So its booze related not SB related.
Also kidney infections are the most serious type of UTI.
If he has both liver and kidney disease its not surprising that he is in bad shape.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

I have sb and I used to drink , so I know about this very well . Booze destroys every major organ in the body ! towards the end I was so weak I could hardly do anything without feeling exausted , and my stomach was a mess. I had a swolen heart , liver , kidneys , pancreas just auful . If someone told him to stop drinking he should but it is very hard ! I don't want to sound preachy but try suggesting AA - Ive been sober 8 yrs best thing I ever did !!I wish I could help .
