Hi, I am 20 wks pregnant and have taken the 1st trimester screening tests. After my 2 blood draws I went in on June 19th for my ultrasound. The tech said everything looked good but when the doc came in he said all blood tests were normal except the risk factor for sb was 1 in 250. He took another look with the ultrasound but said it was maybe too early to tell anything and come back in 10 wks to check again. I got blood drawn again that day and the results now say the risk factor is 1 in 171. The doctor now wants me in this coming Tuesday, July 2 to do another ultrasound. My husband and I are very nervous and scared. Is this how anyone here started to find out? Can anyone give me suggestions on what questions should be asked to my doctor? Of course his attitude was not to worry, but don't they all act like that? I'm more the type that wants to know the truth...don't sugar coat anything. Do you think there may be reason to be stressing like this?? Thanks for all the info by the way that I've read on here..it's been very helpful!

I found out by ultrasound at week 22. my ob office sent me to a neonatologist to make sure but they were right. everything was very clear on the ultrasound, i didnt even have blood tests. I did have an amnio done at the end of the pregnancy but they have you do that to make sure there is nothing else wrong with the baby cause it doesnt detect SB. I hope that helps.

Ugh! I don't think I will ever understand why they play the "numbers game". Don't they realise that its torture?
1 in 250 or 1 in 171 means absolutely nothing when you need a Yes/No answer.
Nobody can do anything about your baby's condition before he/she is born anyway. Stressing about it now is pointless but me saying so is not going to make you stop worrying so just hang in there and we'll do what we can to support you.

Don't panic based on those numbers. Think about it in reverse. 1/250 or 1/171 still means that there is greater than 99% change your baby will be just fine. Don't dwell on the .5% change something might be wrong.
