hi...
in feb my husband and i found out we were around 20 weeks pregnant- big shock and surprise and then were told we were having a baby having spina bifida and hydrocephalas who (according to drs )wouldnt survive the birth, so termination was advised! there, that day!!! i can tell you i wasn't happy with that doctor, not even letting us digest what she just said before telling us to terminate...we asked for another dr. he was happy to give us time to work out what we wanted to do. so we were preparing to say goodbye to our daughter before she was born.:kleenex:
of course we werent going to terminate- but instead letting her guide us in what was going to happen with her birth- either she would cry and fight or give up....
well i have had my beautiful daughter- and she SURVIVED!!
Mia, was born 5 weeks early on the 21st april and after 7 weeks in the womens and childrens hospital in adelaide South Australia-proving every doctor wrong and after 2 surgeries-we are home!!!
the birth was eventful, they nearly lost us both. Eventually a doctor had to insert a needle into her head to drain some fluid as her head was too big. i should say at this stage that we didnt make it to adelaide to deliver as planned- mia was born in tennant creek (in the outback of aussie, very small isolated town, where my husband and i moved our family this year to teach the indigenous peple of australia) after a 5 hour labour. i was meant to go to adelaide the following week to sit it out and wait for a caesar at 38 wks. The flying doctors arrived to take us to alice springs after she was born. we stayed there for one night. she stopped breathing for 1 minute- so they had to put her on a ventilater...the next day it was from there onto adelaide.
here the hell started...surgeries, decisions to be made if she couldnt breathe by herself, swallow , suck, etc...everday we had challenge, everymorning i would go into icu just hoping she was alive...everyday she fought for her life and everyday she proved them all wrong!!!
anyway, enough details. She is a fighter- came out screaming etc and has never given up. She has had surgery to close her lesion on the back and also had a shunt installed. she amazes me everyday. they said she wouldnt move her legs, or swallow, suck- well she does it all. leg movement may be limited but it is more than we expected. the doctors were also amazed at everything she did. alot of doctors and student drs came to the ward just to see this miracle baby.
we are just so happy she survived and is proving everyone wrong.:clap2:
so much for them saying it was so severe she wouldnt survive the birth- you just never know...and doctors dont always get it right. to think if it was up to them our precious mia wouldnt be with us.
i have taken leave from teaching for the remainder of the year to look after her and my 3 yr old daughter jordan...my other 2 girls are in grade 1 & 2...as for next year? who knows we will wait and see where mia is at by then.
sorry this is a bit all over the place- but am holding mia with one hand and typing with the other! not the easiest to do!!
glad to be a part of this...now we are home i have so many questions...at times i really feel for her and what she will have to go through in life, especially school!!
hopefully i can hack into your brains every now and then!! this looks an amazing site to be part of.
cheers,
tmac
