Hi all I am going to share the link for my article that I wrote for the Huffington Post. It was born out of a post I made on here yesterday. :)

That is AWESOME!!!
SECONDED!!!! I believe that denying someone the right to take risks is not merely disabling, it is actually dehumanising. You have a talent for writing, you should develop it and but it to good use.

Thanks guys, I have been invited to post more and as I was telling another friend of mine that has SB I feel obligated to get some truth out there. I don't know how many people actually read it but I don't belong to any group and my only loyalty is to making our lives better. Maybe this is a way to start on that journey.
This went way better than I ever imagined as this article started out on the Parent's section but found it's way to the HOME PAGE! Now I have to find the next subject to work on.

Some of your other posts here could be developed into articles. You've written quite a few great posts here over the years.

Just wanted to let you know I've seen the link to your column circulating in several different (non-SB but mostly special needs parenting) circles this week!

Puzzled!
I thought "special needs" means the person has a requirement for non-standard education, basically a synonym/euphemism for "special education".

Dodger, "special needs" has become the euphemism of choice for any child with a disability or chronic health issue of any type (at least in the US). When someone says they have a "special needs child" it can mean anything, including chronic health issues such as severe asthma or heart defects.

What she said. :)
Yes "special needs" has niggled me. I think it is the same here Lisa, I hear it often enough. I really don't like it!
I guess we want generalised terms, but how has this stuck (like the proverbial).
Anything!, particular needs, personal needs.....what is it, in a word, that we require most, as people who ? call on un-natural intervention and mechanical support for us to maintain ourselves at a basic autonomous 'standard' of physical and social independence.
This it, there is nothing 'special' about attaining basic autonomy or basic social norms.
I just hate it!!!!!!!!

Sean, I think you're onto something here...
Labelling someone as "special needs" creates the impression (consciously or unconsciously - it doesn't really matter) that the person exists in a state of "neediness" and thus requires a constant stream of "charity".
It plays right into the Pity/Charity model of disability, which as we know is a source of resentment from the "ordinary taxpayer" - just take a look at political debates around Social Security programs and funding.
The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis may be largely discredited but there is still a grain of truth to it - linguistic determinism is real.

I don't care for the term myself however that is a subject that I will be covering as well. There is so much to be said, so many issues to be covered and so much for the general public to learn and to read and I have every intention of bringing as many of them to light as I possibly can.
This first article got much much more attention that I ever dreamed it would so that means people are interested in learning and seeing things from a different angle. I now have a big outlet to work with and although I know one person can't change things, I am gonna try to change as much as I can by at least getting a larger conversation started.

This is awesome stuff! Of course you are always welcome to try out article ideas on us.
Gosh, looked up The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, huge amount of research to be discredited, though obviously worthy in comparison of theory.
I only read a few paragraphs, too much....I have so much reading to get through.
I want to scream it from every mountain!!!!
'SPECIAL' and 'SPECIAL NEEDS', to me, today, IS used as AN EXCUSE FOR LIVING!
It makes me sick!
Sean.
