Decided to make this a new thread -

We just did an enema tonight :puke: - saline - 1 cup through an enema bag. It all just squirted back out at me. I held the cheeks closed, but it all still leaked right out, not to mention, it did not work at all - no poop!

Any suggestions? I need major help!

That is definitely a 2-person job. Try as you may to hold cheeks together, it just doesn't happen.....#1, you have force in the way and #2, gravity....NOT a good combination for the procedure you're trying to accomplish. (Sorry if anyone viewed this as grotesque, but it's a fact of life.)

There is no room for squeamishness here.
Shit is what it is and it has to come out.

In fact parents have to rapidly get rid of their "sensitivities" if they are to have a hope of raising a child with SB.

Roger you are so right! But I love my daughter with all my heart. I do it for her.

I'm way over the squeamishes now. I have no problem doing it. We did it every night for the first 4 nights, now to every other. We went to 2 cups of saline water & holding it for 10 minutes. Here are the problems:

1. It hurts her tummy. She squirms & writhes the whole 10 minutes, crying that it hurts. Is this normal?

2. The morning after we don't do one, she always has accidents. She wants badly to go back to "real school" as she calls it, but she can't until we have mornings under control. Should I be doing one every night, or am I doing something wrong?

I think 2 cups of saline is too much.
I use 800cc, that is less than 4 cups and I weigh more than 150 pounds!

Ten minutes also seems like an extremely long time to me.
I only hold it no more than 3-4 minutes.

Doing it at night might help.I used to do it in the mornings before school but I missed school sometimes because it took forever and when I thought I was done I usually wasn't so night was safest for me. I only do it every once in a while now because it does hurt and I only hold it in for two minutes U would use like 500 ccs of soap and water mix

I've been told:
Put 100ccs/10lbs (of the child's weight) of *lukewarm water in the enema
bag.

I do it at night now - just before she goes to bed - every other night. Thanks for the ccs per pound. That might help. But she still has accidents on the morning after NOT having an enema. She cries to be able to go back to school with her friends, but I don't see how until I have those morning accidents under control.

We use about 900 cc's (some flows out) of warm water with only a tiny bit of vinegar for 5 minutes. She drinks 17 grams of Miralax in cranberry juice every other night.

Do you alternate nights of Miralax/enemas?

No, I give her the Miralax on "potty" night. It helps me to remember.

When Gabi 1st started taking the Miralax, the dosage was too much for her. Her urologist said to 1/2 the amount and give it to her every night. We did that for a while, until I kept forgetting the opposite nights. We went back to every other night with the 17 grams. Now she is not having a problem with the dosage.:19a:

I wonder if something oral would be easier for her? I'm 25 and enemas have never worked for me. The liquid comes straight back out like you said happens with your child. I had accidents all the time up until very recently. There are medicines that do pretty much the same thing as an enema, but they go through the other end (which is preferable for me as I do not have a sphincter and cannot hold an enema). I tried magnesium citrate. Tastes like crap, but works like a charm. If you can get her to drink it this may be an easier solution for both of you. Ask your doc first though as I am not a doctor and can only speak from personal experience.

Does it work right away?

I haven't started to give enemas to my dd, she's 12mos. now. It has been ordered just in case I may need it. They told me to give a pediatric fleets enema. I'm not sure how to know when she needs it. an xray showed a slightly dialated colon, with gas, also stool. Dr. called it an ileus. But she doesn't have any sx bloating, decrease appetite. She still has bm's, small & thin at times, soft and formed others. Dr. said most likely not an ileus, since she's doing fine. I give her 2 tsp. of miralax every am. Sometimes its perfect constistency others its too soft and poops all day 8-10x. Her poor rectum gets raw despite the generous diaper ointments used each time. I toilet her after meals to take advantage of colic reflex. It helps larger amts to come out all at once.

anyone else have a routine to help their little ones or themselves to achieve continence?

I use 17 mg too. But i use enemeez. And sometimes it wont work at all and sometimes it works alittle too much. Actually its kinda funny because my sister finds water bottles in the fridge and it is so funny because they ask me if its mine so it wont happen to them but it would be so funny if it did. my name is jordan R and i will have any answers about spina bifida and maybe alittle more than that but i would be willing to try to answer all the ?s you have.
