Hi there, I delivered my daughter naturally and would do it again. There are so many benefits to the natural birth. When the head is pushed through the birth canal the pressure stimulates the release of massive doses of hormones that kick start the body's organs. The pressure on the lungs not only expels any excess fluid but also prepares the baby for that first breath. Check out these reports for yourself.

Despite the shock of all that came once she was delivered ( I did not know she had SB until she was born) I will always be thoroughly grateful that I gave birth to her. It is something I continue to think about ( she is now nearly three ). Natural birth can be not only best for baby but also for mother. ( a c- section is a major surgery and takes a long time to recover from). good luck, whatever you choose. Take some arnica !!

and it was good for Erin as there was less stress on her but if I had the chance again I would go for natural. It took a long time to get over the surgery and as you are going through so many different issues with a new baby (never mind the SB) it can really take it out of you. Go for natural as long as it's ok for baby.

I had a c section. I was back walking for an hour and a half ( to the NICU and back) within the week. I recovered quickly. It prevented any extra stress on my baby and didnt risk putting any pressure on his back. If your baby has a covered lesion the pressure from a natural birth can burst the lesion open.

I went for the natural birth because i wanted to be able to go to nicu immediatley with him, he had an open lesion, my obstetrician said that i could choose as they both carry the same risks, the blister can still burst with a c-section.

I went for a c- section as i was worried bout my babys head as i knew she had such a large head from the hydro that and i was expecting twins! But i was told i could have a natural. I was up and walkin around after the first day and although i was sore the first week i made a quick recovery.

I had a c-section with Analise. My first-born son was c-section-- having a VBAC with her wasn't too appealing. And once I knew of the SB it was definitely my first choice to go c-section again. To be honest, the day of delivery was one of the hardest.. I was so nervous! I cannot imagine going through labor during that stress.

My mom wished she had a c section. I was a very long labor. I refused to come out and no one could figure out why. They finally had to literally have a lady push on my mom's stomach. She said it was awful. Little did they know until I was born that I had sb.

I was terrified of having a c section. Turns out its so easy. You feel nothing. Its just so easy. I was amazed! Way faster recovery after. I was still arguing with myself about having a c section when I was being wheeled into theatre. I did it for peace of mind. That way everybody was ready and waiting for Fergus. I am so glad I did it. I feel good inside that I did everything I could for my baby to improve the odds. There have been a few studies that have said c section is better. It all depends on the individual case I would say, but I think its not worth taking the risk.

My 1st 2 girls were natural easy stress free...simply bliss! Then hannah came along! I was stressed to the max but made it thru....just remember the doctors are prepared and everything is in Gods hands. I truly think c sections are better for sb babies only because so much pressure and all on them if they were natural with hydro and the lesion just seems risky. But i was told either is fine but i went c section. my prayers are with you and your family

I gave birth naturally because we did not know about the SB. All of the nurses in the NICU were shocked that I did not have a C-section. Like the other, I was also told that the sack could have broken in delivery.

The meningocele sac is not always so fragile.
It can have an adequate thickness of skin which won't rupture. The thickness will be measured by ultrasound and taken into considderation when chosing birth options.

I was born naturally as my mom didn't know I had SB until I was born. My son has sbo and since i have SB myleo a c section was chosen for me as it was the only way I would have been able to deliver him.
I hear some saying that the C section was easy. It was the most horrible surgery I have ever had. Worse than my spinal fusion! It may have to do with the way I walk. Since i can't use all my muscles correctly I rely heavily on my stomach muscles.
My C section zapped all my strength, was very very painful, and it took a good while for me to recover from it. One of the reasons I said I would never have another child (there are a few reasons) was because I didn't think I could go through the recovery process again.
Just my experience

I'm really glad you asked this question because I am debating the same thing. I am 21 weeks and just found out he will have SB. My first son came out quick and easy, I was so blessed!! I am terrifyed of having ANY kind of surgery and wish that I didn't have any of this to worry about because I would do it natural again in a second but I don't want to hurt my baby any further than his spine already is!! It's so scary and confusing!!

oh my gosh, reading this makes me want to cry. :( i was not given much choice and was told a c section was the only way to go. i guess each case really is individual and they did expect my baby to have an enlarged head (it was totally normal). i did end up having him 3.5 weeks early due to meconium in the amnio fluid so i guess that warranted a c section anyways. but having done 2 other natural births, if you have a choice then go natural. if i never have more kids i will always be sad that my last one was a c section. i truly hated going through that. it wasn't horrible....things turned out just fine...but i hated it.

same here! I had an easy c-section, never required anything more than Advil for pain. I was up walking to the NICU in a matter of days. I was told if the lesion is open it is better for a babe to be born c-section.

My dh was also born naturally, and they didn't know until he was born about the SB.

Same here. My mom also wishes that she would have had a c-section. She and I wonder if there may have been extra damage done on the lesion had the c-section been done. However she had no idea either that I had sb until after the birth. Best of luck in whatever you decide Zenia

I reluctantly had an elective c/s. Our plan had been for Abby to be born at home, like her big brother was and her bigger brother nearly was (we transferred to hospital with him).

The obstetrician initially gave me a choice and said there wasn't much difference, but the orthopaedic surgeon we were seeing prenatally said there was a small amount of research showing better neurological function in children born by c/s. Much as I hated the idea of a surgical birth, the possibility of limiting Abby's function made the decision easier to come to terms with.

We did identify the research paper, but I don't have it to hand right now.

Our plan was to have Gabi naturally. We went through the Lamaze classes and were very excited about it. However, at 10 days past due, an ultrasound detected the problems and I had a c-section that night. (I was at 9cm when I went in, so I didnt escape the labor pains. LOL) The pain afterward was unbelievable, but I think it was mostly due to the shock and emotional state I was in. I would have a c-section again, even knowing about the pain for me. Even if vaginal birth is safe for SB, I wouldn't want to take the chance of the consequences of a rupture.

I had my son 3 years later by c-section because my doctor would not do a VBAC and there was not near as much pain or recovery time. (That's why I think my first horrible experience was due to my emotional state.)
