This is from a list I am on but I thought I would pass it on in the interest of sharing.

My son just got new AFOs this morning and they are so cool I thought I'd
share.

They have a carbon fiber piece down the back which wraps under his heel to
the center of his foot. When he steps down on his foot the carbon
compresses, storing energy, and when he lifts off his foot that stored
energy is released giving him an extra boost.

He wore Cascades dafos previously, but was always cracking the plastic. (He
is 9, about 65 lbs, and L4/L5/S1 level).

Today, with these new ottobock afos (fabricated at our local orthotist) he
stands taller and picks his feet higher off the floor.

I've put a couple of videos up on YouTube so I can show my husband (he's
deployed) and figured I'd share with the rest of the class.

Our orthotist said this type of AFO works with a very small population of
active ambulatory patients and this was the first pair he'd made.

Very clever design - the carbon spring takes over the function of the Achilles tendon.

Looks like you're raising the next "Oscar Pistorius":peace:

Oh, that is not my son. The quote was from the youtube page of the family who it is. Very clever design - the carbon spring takes over the function of the Achilles tendon.

Oky excuse the dumb question but what does AFO stand for?

Articulated Foot Orthosis (I believe). Basically braces that go below the knee

What's a KAFO?
How about we start a jargon buster thread?

The idea of a jargon busting thread sounds good.

Good idea. I wrote this list YEARS ago with some friends and gave it to some sb sites : http://spinabifidaconnection.com/showthread.php?t=2&highlight=terms but it doesn't have a lot of the acronyms.

KAFO-Knee-ankle foot orthosis. Basically an afo that extends above the knee. I have both of these for C. If I can uncover them (and my camera battery) from the moving boxes I will post pictures. That actually would be a good thread too...pictures of all types of equipment. Hmm, thoughts of things to do this week, lol.

Agreed. I like the idea of photos and descriptions.
