Default Prophylaxis Antibiotics For UTI

Have you guys ever gotten pseudomembranous colitis? Any idea what are the chances of being down with that problem given that I'm on long term antibiotics for recurrent UTIs?

Cool factor of being on Nitrofurantoin is that I have neon yellow pee! Lol! Ok, I've never really seen neon yellow pee in my life ever, so it's kinda cool to see it. Haha!

I have no idea, sorry. But I wanted to thank you for bringing this up. I never even heard of pseudomembranous colitis before, and only now (after googling it) realise it is something I probably will have to watch out for in my daughter. I'll stock up some more on the probiotics for her!

She too is on Nitrofurantoin for prophylaxis. She would've loved to get neon coloured wee... But hers just changed to a darker brown once she started with it.

Ha Ha. I too am on prophylactic Nitrofurantoin. Since the summer I was on antibiotics every few weeks for UTI's and then in November they started me on the prophylactic antibiotics and I feel like I got my life back. Thankfully I have had no side effects whatsoever, and I am hoping to stay that way!

Not every bug is sensitive to every antibiotic, so it seems quite possible that you could have an infection while being on prophylaxis. Also, sometimes antibiotics kill off the "good" bugs that keep the "bad" bugs in the intestine at bay. I wonder if the colitis thingy could actually be the result of the prophylaxis?

It actually is a known side effect, but from what I understand, it is on the rarer side. Like many other things SB related, I personally feel it is a balancing act. I am going abroad in March, and when I get back, I am going to talk to my urologist about trying to come off the antibiotics because I do not want to be on them forever. (But I want to make sure I feel good when I am out of the country! I've already had to go to Accident and Emergency once in London, and hope not to do it again!)

Yes, prophylaxis can cause the colitis thingy. Coz long term antibiotics wipe out the good bacteria which can then make the bad ones flourish and cause you to have diarrhea, severe stomachache, fever etc. So far so good, I haven't encountered anything like that. Heh! Just wondering..
